Bob Nutting speaks McClatchy

Bob Nutting, the Pirates’ new principal owner, addressed the team’s staff, coaches and players this morning and, by all accounts, stressed in his speech that ownership is committed to winning (whereas before they … weren’t?).
Nutting told the players he had confidence in chief executive officer Kevin McClatchy (why?), general manager Dave Littlefield (WHY??!!) and manager Jim Tracy, as well as the baseball operations staff’s general plan to build from within (yeah, that’s working real good).
“The message is that our fans are hungry (famished. We could eat Bill Peduto.) and the organization is just as hungry (prove it.). We need to see continued improvement (CONTINUED improvement? How’s about ANY improvement?). We need to have patience to stick with the plan. (I’d say 14 years is pretty patient.) But, really, I think the point where we need to start showing things is right now (I’d say you’re about seven years too late). I think we have a great opportunity this year.”
I’m not getting my hopes up. That way, worst case, I get what I expected. Best case, I’m pleasantly surprised.

Mr. Nutting, kindly spare us from your platitudes and the blather about how committed the Pirates organization is to winning. You have forfeited any right to presume we believe you. One thing, and one thing only, matters: the Pirates need to win. There are grown-up fans in this town who have never experienced what it is like to be in a pennant race late in the season — to actually watch the scoreboard to see how other teams in the division are faring, and to cheer when one of our rivals is being beaten. You certainly know that several years ago, the voters went to the polls in droves and voted against being taxed for new sports venues for the Pirates and Steelers. The politicians found a way to fund new ballparks anyway, based in large measure on the Pirates’ representations that a new ballpark was necessary to make the Pirates competitive. So, be competitive. And shut up until you are. Then we’ll listen.

continued improvement… ok, soo they did play over 500 after the allstar break last year.
but really who wants to hear that crap? ever hear a rooney talk that way? just bring back the lumber company and get on with it.

I just hope he’s committed to more great promotions like “Pup Night” to distract us from what’s on the field.

Eh, I gave up on the Nuttings long ago. They’re worse than even the Cubs’ owners in terms of sitting back and raking in profits while the team sucks.
My favorite though are my friends who say, without fail every year, “Seriously, man, I know it sounds crazy, but I really think we could compete this season.” Save the delusion!
