Matt, we already did. It’s called 2003-04. He had 22 goals and 43 points in 81 games.
If you look across his seasons, you can see that playing with Geno didn’t give him that much of a boost - only about 5 goals. What that says to me is that his own talent can get him 20 goals consistently but you can’t get much more out of him no matter who you put him with.
He’s definitely a player you want on your team, and I’ll miss him too. But even with his leadership qualities it just wouldn’t have been worth it for the Pens to give him what the market was willing to pay…that’s 30-goal-scorer money for a 20-goal-scoring guy.
I wish him well, of course.

Well…he signed. 7 years at $31.5 Million.
He’ll be missed…if only for the “local player” tag he has.
